5 Musts Before Summer Ends

In a recent article on Oprah.com, authors Lynn Andriani and Amber Kallor highlighted the eight things you must do before the end of summer. We’ve decided to modify the list down to five and include why these five things will also help you slow down and appreciate the season and yourself.

1. Take off your shoes – No matter if you live in a climate that is warm all year round or only those summer months, the act of taking off your shoes and letting your feet be free will also help free your mind. You have approximately 7,800 nerves in each foot. Take your feet for a spin in the sand (wet and dry) on the grass, or even in the puddles or mud. Connecting your feet to nature can help ground your mind as well.

2. Stargaze – On a nice summer night, take yourself and maybe a friend, partner, family member, outside to a wide open area to gaze at the millions of stars in the sky. Think about what you are actually looking at. Put your life in the context of sitting on planet earth, gazing into the universe outside. Our solar system is a miracle in itself. Check out the Milky Way, as it is brightest in the summer.

3. Dance – If you haven’t already, make a summer playlist of all the songs that remind you of some of the best summer days either this season or summers in the past. Invite friends over or have a solo dance party while cooking, grilling or just spending time together. Let loose and move like no one is watching. If you don’t want all up-tempo songs, mix a couple of smooth, slow songs in there to sway and take-in those warm summer nights.

4. Fill your house with the aroma of a fresh pie – As the summer days wind down, so too does the temperature (not always, but you will have a couple cool nights). Why not bake a fresh, homemade pie to serve at dessert. The act of baking and the rich smells that come along with it are sure to create fond memories and delicious treats!

5. Get in the water – If you live on a coast, the average ocean water temperatures are highest in August, especially in the northern Atlantic and Pacific. If you’re closer to a lake or river, those temperatures should be relatively high as well. Immerse yourself in the water and just float. Let your body relax and just become enriched by the summer sun and the refreshing waters.

How do you “just be” in the moment?

We all know that life can get crazy. Sometimes we need to put down our cell phones, shut down our computers and turn off our televisions. Sometimes we need to really open our eyes and look around us at the beauties in our backyards, the magic and love pouring out of our family and friends, and be in awe of the mystery of the world. Sometimes we need to let go of all things keeping us from living in the moment.

Sometimes we just need to be.

How do you try to “just be” in the moment?

5 Steps to Internalizing Positive Affirmation

Have you heard the phrase, “you are your toughest critic?” For some people, this is a painful reality. Internalizing a positive affirmation (a declaration that something positive is true), from others or from you, can be very difficult. A recent article in Huffington Post by Ronald Alexander Ph.D., author of “Wise Mind, Open Mind,” tackles this issue and offers steps to embodying encouraging statements.

Starting at a young age, we receive negative affirmations from people around us. These messages can remain in our conscious or subconscious for a long time if we do nothing about it. They can then override any positive affirmations we receive, even if we aren’t aware of it.

Here are the five steps that Alexander offers to make affirmations more effective and powerful in your life:

-Make a list of what you’ve always thought of as your negative qualities. Think back to what others may have told you, or things you may believe to be true about yourself. Look for themes. This is a great start to making a shift in your life.

-List positive affirmations about yourself. Try to use powerful language (dust off that old thesaurus) to describe your positive aspects. Ask a close friend to read your list to see if he or she has any suggestions to make the wording stronger.

-Speak the affirmation out loud for about five minutes, three times a day. Schedule time (morning, noon and night) to say or write the powerful, positive statements out loud over and over. Find time when you’re alone, or even in front of a mirror, to do this exercise.

-Anchor the affirmation in your body. “Breathe” into the affirmation while you are saying or writing it. Place your hand on the area that felt the most uncomfortable when you wrote out the negative belief in step one. As your mind re-programs, you want to move from the concept of the affirmation to a real, positive embodiment of the quality.

-Get a friend or coach to repeat your affirmation to you. Having another person reaffirm these positive messages helps make the statements tangible. If you don’t have someone in your life who you would feel comfortable asking to do this, stand in front of a mirror and repeat the affirmations as the person reinforcing the message.

“Affirmations can be a powerful tool to help you change your mood, state of mind and manifest the change you desire in your life.” (source).

8 Successful People Who Failed At First

As Americans we are extremely wrapped up in perfection and greatness; however, we often forget that the road to greatness is often paved with failures, imperfections and mistakes. We get so caught up in critiquing ourselves, and dwelling upon these failures that we cannot move past them. Like bricks stuck to our feet, these failures weigh on our hearts and minds, engulfing us in their worries, and trapping us in the past. But what if we took another look at failure and made that word a positive? In honor of the many failures and mistakes we will all make, here are eight people who turned their mistakes, failures and imperfections and turned them into greatness.

  1. Albert Einstein. Now regarded as a science genius, Einstein was once deemed ‘mentally slow’, kicked out of one school and denied admittance to another.
  2. Walt Disney. Disney went bankrupt several times, and was fired from his job at a newspaper for his ‘lack of creativity and ideas’ before he created Disneyland.
  3. Lucille Ball. This ‘I Love Lucy’ star was a former B lister actress, and told by her acting coaches to try another profession.
  4. Wayne Gretzky. Nicknamed “The Great One”, Gretzky was considered to have an unimpressive stature along with poor strength and speed.
  5. Thomas Edison. Fired twice and 1,000 attempts at the light bulb, without him we would be in the dark!
  6. Theodor Seuss Giesel (you may also know him as Dr. Seuss). Seuss’ books almost went unpublished and unread. His first book was rejected by 27 different publishers.
  7. Oprah Winfrey. Known today as the face of talk show TV, Oprah grew up in abusive household, and was fired from one television station because she was apparently, ‘unfit for TV’.
  8. J.K. Rowling. Before becoming the famous author of the Harry Potter books, Rowling was attending school, divorced, depressed and trying to raise a child.

What Is Your Voice Telling You?

Every now and then, we have one of those ‘awakening’ moments in life. It may have been prompted by a serious illness, hitting rock bottom or the death of a loved one. What ever it was, the voice that was once faint suddenly became loud and clear. That ‘voice’ sounds different to each and every person, it may motivate you to change your career path, to open your heart and mind to spirituality or to end a failing relationship. What ever the case, when you hear that voice it is a powerful moment to be embraced and respected.

This voice is your voice of reason, subconscious, and intuition. It is a voice you usually know is correct, but most often choose to disregard. However, eventually this ‘voice’ becomes like hot lava gaining so much momentum underneath your core, that it bursts through like a volcano erupting. When you have that moment you may feel lost, confused and unsure of the direction in which to turn next. You know you need a change, yet you are just unsure of the steps you need to get there.

This is where Sedona Soul Adventures comes in. Founder Debra Stangl heard that same voice; changing her direction and ultimately helping her to establishing Sedona Soul Adventures (watch her story below). With the help of Debra and other compassionate and inspirational guides and healers, you too can transition that ‘voice’ into actions which will begin your healing journey to transformation.
